charcoal and epoxy on panel,
96 x 144"

At age seven, while at my elementary school in Denver, Colorado, I had my first run in with the law. Having had a disagreement with
another second grader I was sent to the principle's office to cool
my jets. The administrative assistant to the headmaster needing
to keep this young hooligan busy, gave me a pencil and paper
and said,"kid, draw something for the school play" - I doodled a
group of kids singing. To my surprise my drawing was used as
the program announcement and several hundred copies were
made. I then said to my self, "there's something to this drawing
thing, hmmm."
I try to push open the boundaries of drawing with the inclusion of liquid to the primal and powdery material of charcoal. With charcoal, being fire and wood, an ancient mark-making tool, and liquid, in the form of clear liquid epoxy, I am able to capture movement and mark by raising the powder off the surface, floating and suspending the element in motion. Forever fascinated by the craft of drafting and the feel of pencil to paper, the joy of drawing has never left me. I use pencil, pen and ink, pastel and oil pastel, charcoal and marker.
